History

SISTUHS, Inc. was organized at the University of South Florida (USF) in 1998. The chapter became an official organization of USF in October 1999, with the successful completion of the chapter's first Rights of Passage. A young woman of color, by the name of Lashan A. King, chartered the University of South Florida’s chapter of SISTUHS, Inc. and was accompanied by 18 charter members. On average the chapter successfully inducts approximately fifty women of color every year into the University of South Florida’s chapter of SISTUHS, Inc.

As members of SISTUHS Inc., the USF Chapter has exemplified our initiative and concern for our environment and people of color through the creation of several programs. These programs, which are now annual events, are:

"Enhancing the Already Beautiful Woman" (initiated by SISTUH Aisha Lewis in 1999), which is a one day workshop, open to all women on campus, that aids women to discover, or bring out, their inner beauty, discusses self-awareness, self-esteem, and how to maintain a good bodily image

"Dancing to Save Lives" (also initiated by SISTUH Aisha Lewis in 2001), which was established to raise money for children who lost their parents in the 9-11 Tragedy, and is still put on annually in remembrance, and to donate to their charity

"Brother’s Day" (initiated by Keshia Tracey in 2000), which is a two day dedication to uplifting men, particularly men of color, on our campus through the special treatment of therapeutic massages, positive conversations with the Nubian Queens of SISTUHS, Inc., and uplifting words of sistuhly and brotherly love

"Women’s Day" (also initiated by Keshia Tracey in 2000), which is a day when a guest speaker comes out to the campus and discusses helpful information to women on different issues/subjects each year. During "Women’s Day" there are also vendors, such as Mary Kay and Avon, who provide hygiene and beauty tips.
